Job overview

This is a pivotal time to join our organisation. University Hospitals of Derby and Burton provides secondary and tertiary level care to patients across Derbyshire and Staffordshire and the surrounding areas. As a major Acute Trust in the region we have recently played a significant role in the response to the COVID-19 pandemic. We are looking for a forward looking and transformational clinical leader to join our Orthoptic Department.

As a Senior Orthoptists, you will have experience in managing patient pathways at both an individual and cohort level. You will have strategic insight and problem solving skills that will help us address the backlog created by the pandemic. You will be flexible and adaptable with strong influencing skills and an aptitude for leading and embedding change within our teams.

This role will be spread across two of our Trust sites, Royal Derby Hospital and Queens Hospital Burton

Main duties of the job

You will be the lead clinical manager for Orthoptics across UHDB

  • Experience of managing various pathways of care that exist in Orthoptics.
  • Experience in delivering MDT care with colleagues in Ophthalmology and Optometry.
  • Delivering and embedding change and transformational improvements into the department.
  • Communicating with a wide variety of stakeholders and taking an active role in service design across the Trust and the counties.
  • Delivering excellent patient facing care.
  • Coordinating resource to provide enough capacity to meet the demands on our service.
  • Dealing with complex HR issues and managing a team.
  • Holding the budget for a large outpatient service.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

You will be the most senior operational, clinical and strategic manager to the Orthoptics service at UHDB. You will be responsible for:

  • Ensuring staff are suitably trained and skilled to deliver care to our patients.
  • Ensuring that the Business Unit provides sufficient capacity to deliver the planned activity for the year.
  • Manage the budget for Orthoptics
  • Deliver the strategy and transformational objectives of the Orthoptic service across the two acute sites and community hospitals.
  • Provide Subject Matter Expertise and advice to a range of stakeholders including the General Manager, Divisional Director and the Clinical Commissioning Groups.
  • Support the deliver of Ophthalmic care and liaise closely with Consultant Ophthalmologists in the MDT approach to care planning for our patients.
