Job overview

University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust are looking for a full time qualified Orthodontic Technologist to work within The Maxillofacial / Orthodontic Department.

The role will support both Orthodontic and Oral Maxillofacial departments at both Royal Derby Hospital and Queens Hospital Burton. The position will be instrumental in the development of high quality appliances in close collaboration with the clinical teams.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will need to be proactive, self-motivated, enthusiastic and have excellent technical knowledge of Orthodontic Technology  along with  good communication and organisational skills.  

The role will be based Royal Derby Hospital Technologist but there will be a requirement for the post holder to work flexibly across both the Burton and Derby sites.

The successful candidate will be expected to work between the hours of 8:30am to 5:00pm Monday to Friday.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

We are a busy, but friendly team of five Technologists. two Maxillofacial Prosthetist/ Technologists, one Orthodontic Technologist and an Assistant Technician based at the Royal Derby Hospital.   The team provide a clinical and technical service to the departments within the Head and Neck Unit constructing intra & extra oral prostheses and medical devices to the Maxillofacial Specialty and orthodontic retainers, fixed /removable/ functional appliance therapy appliances for the Orthodontic Department

The Laboratories also provide orthognathic model planning and surgical splints to both the Maxillofacial and Orthodontic joint clinics. We have 3D printing technology and software which we are using for Orthodontics and Oral Maxillofacial departments.

  • Construct a variety of Orthodontic retainers/ aligners, providing a same day service.
  •  Use of 3D printing technology and software in the preparation of orthodontic appliances and virtual models.
  •  Construct a variety of Highly Complex Fixed Orthodontic Appliances including Intrusion /SARME/ RME appliances  
  •  Repair and maintain Orthodontic appliances
  •  Construct a variety of Highly Complex removable/ Functional Orthodontic Appliances
  •  Construct Sleep Apnoea Appliances
  • Prepare Orthognathic Cases for Surgical Model Planning including pre/ post Op movements from Clinical prescription including   Surgical splint construction

Knowledge,training,experience

Essential criteria
  • BTEC National Award or BSc in Dental Technology or similar registered qual in Orthodontic Technology
  • Post Graduate Qual in Advanced Orthodontic Technology or equivalent experience
  • Evident computer skills and knowledge of 3D Planning
  • Able to assist and participate in procedures for clinical Governance and audit

Planning and Judgement

Essential criteria
  • Ability to analyse range of materials available and adapt to patient physiology
  • Able to to effectively time management to efficient produce appliances and deal with urgent requests

Physical Skills

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of high degree of dexterity linked to speed and accuracy of work.

  • Ensure Trust/Laboratory policies are followed and records maintained under the latest Medical Devices legislation
