Job overview

Applications are invited for a Locum Consultant Microbiologist at University Hospitals Derby and Burton to join the team of 6 Microbiologists. This is a 6 month fixed-term post to cover maternity leave commencing around October 2021

Applicants should hold Full GMC registration with a Licence to practise and preferably GMC Specialist Register in Microbiology/Medical Microbiology and another infection speciality or be within 6 months of obtaining their CCT at the time of interview, although this is not an essential requirement for a Locum Consultant post.

Successful candidates would join the team working across the Trust and community, delivering the clinical infection service. The post attracts 10 PAs and the post holder will be expected to work flexibly across Derby and Burton sites and to participate in the out-of-hours on-call rota.

Applications would also be welcome from those wishing to work part-time.

Main duties of the job

There are currently microbiology laboratories on both the Royal Derby and Queens Hospital Burton sites, providing comprehensive diagnostic microbiology services to University Hospitals of Derby and Burton acute Trusts, Derbyshire and Staffordshire general practices and local private healthcare providers. The role will encompass but is not limited to clinical reporting, participation in MDTs, antimicrobial stewardship, clinical consults, infection prevention and control and ward rounds. Candidates will be encouraged to develop areas of special interest.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Duties & Responsibilities of the Post (for detailed information please see supporting documents)

The post holder will be expected to participate with the current medical staff in the provision of an infection consultation service, infection rounds on specialist units, the interpretation of laboratory reports and the on-call infection service rota.

Team deliver leadership for

  • Antimicrobial stewardship
  • Infection control
  • Community infection control

Main Clinical Activities

  • Liaison and ward/department visits to discuss individual clinical cases and infection prevention and control issues within the hospital
  • Ward visits especially to ICU, renal, haematology and NICU/SCBU.
  • Advice regarding diagnostic tests, antibiotic usage, interpretation of results, general patient management to GPs – usually telephone advice on individual patients.
  • Validation of and interpretation of laboratory test results.
  • Ward rounds and patient discussion groups
  • Antibiotic stewardship rounds     
  • Attend clinical antibiotic guideline group and antibiotic sub group.

Infection Prevention Duties

  • Weekly difficile review group/MDT and MSSA review group
  • Advise and support the IPCNs in day-to-day activities.

Educational and other activities

  • Involvement in quality assurance performance within the department, including taking part in all relevant national external quality assurance (NEQAS) programmes.
  • Teaching and training a wide range of health care workers

 Managerial Arrangements

In conjunction with the Laboratory Manager, you will be expected to manage all aspects of laboratory work on a day-to-day basis including supervision of specimen examination and reporting. The appointee will work closely with other service providers such as the Biomedical Scientists, Infection Prevention Nurses and Antibiotics Pharmacists in the day-to-day provision of an efficient and effective Microbiology and Infection Prevention service in the Trust.  The employee will assist with the responsibility for use and security of the Trust’s assets, including their own use, and ensuring correct use by others.

Job Plan

 A job plan will be agreed between the appointee and the Assistant Clinical Director, on behalf of the Executive Medical Director. The job plan is for the 6 months with an average 10 programmed activities per week. 

 Job plan rotates over 4 week cycle

Week 1 - On call microbiologist Monday to Friday, this can be worked off site

Week 2 – Duty microbiologist, clinical  and laboratory liaison, community/ hospital  

Week 3 - Renal, neonatal, ITU ward round, teaching, MDT, antibiotic ward round /review of antibiotic audit, Week end on call Friday to Monday

Week 4 – Infection control duties + attending IC meetings, update IC policy, MDT, HACI RCA meeting, audit, DCHS meetings & policy review

On-call availability supplement:

On-call Rota 1 in 5

Agreed category A

On–call supplement 8%

The appointee will be expected to participate in this rota, providing an out-of-hours emergency service (weekend 72 hours) on a shared basis, 1:5 with other consultants within the department and one night/week. Due to the complex nature of the advice on call period, attracts a Class A supplement.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC register with a licence to practice on application
  • Experience in medical microbiology
  • Fellowship of Royal college of pathologist (FRCPath) or equivalent
  • Satisfactory participation in the CPD scheme of the Royal College of Pathologists (or equivalent)
Desirable criteria
  • Higher research Degree (MD or PhD)
  • Diploma in Hospital Infection Control (or equivalent)
  • GMC Specialist Registration or be eligible for registration within six months of interview)

Clinical Experience

Essential criteria
  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining a UK CCT
Desirable criteria
  • UK experience in clinical microbiology/infection control

Teaching

Essential criteria
  • Experience of and commitment to teaching undergraduates and postgraduates including microbiology Specialist trainee
  • Experience of supervising (clinical and educational) F1, F2, ST trainees
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in teaching/training
  • Experience in training junior staff
