Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated and enthusiastic HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist to support our team as a Specialist Biomedical Scientist in Haematology and Blood Transfusion based at the Royal Derby Hospital site.

The individual will be required to assist senior staff within the department to maintain and develop the service in line with departmental objectives and to assist with the training, instruction and supervision of Biomedical Scientists and Associate Practitioners within the department.

Main duties of the job

  • To undertake the day to day sample processing and analytical clinical investigations for Haematology and Blood Transfusion to the agreed standard of timeliness and quality
  • Supervise Band 5 Biomedical Scientists and Associate Practitioners within their work area
  • To maintain and operate all equipment in the laboratory to the desired standards of safety, cleanliness and performance
  • To engage in training and competency assessment of staff and perform annual staff appraisals
  • To fully participate in the 24/7 shift system

Familiarisation and understanding of ISO 15189 standards, Health & Safety requirements; audit and training/education techniques is essential. Experience of utilising transformation methodologies to drive change and improve service delivery is also desirable. Proactive individuals, with drive and dedication will excel in this post.

Preference will be given to HCPC registered Biomedical Scientists with Haematology and Blood Transfusion laboratory experience and who have an IBMS Specialist Portfolio in Haematology and Blood Transfusion. However, HCPC registered Biomedical Scientists with Haematology and Blood Transfusion laboratory experience currently working at band 5 level without an IBMS Specialist Portfolio will also be considered. Candidates should be working towards their IBMS Specialist Portfolio.
