UNIVERSITY HOSPITALS OF DERBY AND BURTON NHS FOUNDATION TRUST

Applications are invited for a fixed-term (6 months) Locally Employed Registrar post in the Vascular Surgery starting in August 2022. The department are looking to appoint an enthusiastic individual to join a forward thinking and proactive team of consultants

The posts will support the team across all areas of elective activity including theatres, day case, outpatients and endoscopy, with potential opportunity to participate in a dedicated vascular surgical on-call rota.

This post does not hold educational approval but is ideal for doctors who wish to pursue a career in Vascular Surgery. The post offers excellent opportunities to learn both clinical and practical skills.

Main duties of the job

A top performing Foundation Trust and Teaching hospital, we are currently looking to appoint an enthusiastic individuals to join the Vascular Surgery  department. Applicants should have a minimum of 2 years’ experience in General Surgery not including Foundation years. Possession of the MRCS is essential. Candidates should be eligible to work in the UK and hold full GMC Registration at the time of application. 

Clinical components of role include supporting the vascular surgery team across all areas of the service – theatres, day case and outpatients. 

This post does not hold educational approval but is ideal for doctors who wish to pursue a career in Vascular Surgery. This post offers excellent opportunities to learn clinical and practical skills and there are regular surgical teaching rounds. Enthusiasm and experience of Undergraduate teaching is essential.

The post is based at the Royal Derby Hospital, one of the newest hospitals in the country, providing state of the art facilities with access to a full range of excellent diagnostic and treatment facilities including a 9 theatre operating suite with 3 fully integrated laparoscopic theatres, 3 day case theatres and a robotic theatre suite.

In July 2022 our new hybrid vascular interventional theatre suit will be fully functional at the Royal Derby Hospital site. The hybrid theatre will enhance patient care for patients undergoing major vascular elective and emergency procedures.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The appointees will work a 40 hour weekly programme with a mixed job plan to be agreed with the successful candidates prior to commencement.  The provisional timetable consists of inpatient and day case elective theatre sessions, emergency operating, outpatient clinics, MDT and daily ward rounds, with the opportunity to participate in the dedicated vascular emergency on-call rota.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • MRCS or approved overseas equivalent
  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practice at time of application
Desirable criteria
  • Higher degree
  • Distinctions, prizes, awards, scholarships, presentations & publications

Experience

Essential criteria
  • 2 years experience in Surgery (not including Foundation Years) at least 6 months must be in Gen. Surg.
  • Minimum of 6 months experience in Vascular Surgery beyond foundation jobs
  • Minimum of 6 months experience within a UK Healthcare setting
Desirable criteria
  • 6-12 months middle grade experience in Vascular Surgery
  • UK experience in Vascular Surgery

Clinical and Technical Skills

Desirable criteria
  • Attendance at relevant courses e.g. ATLS, Basic Surgical Skills or equivalent.

Audit

Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of participation and understanding of the principles of audit
