Fixed Term Senior Clinical Fellow in General Surgery (Thyroid & Vascular)

Applications are invited for a fixed-term (12 months) Clinical Fellowship in the Thyroid and Vascular department based at Royal Derby Hospital, Derby starting in September 2021. The department are looking for an enthusiastic experienced individual to join a forward thinking and proactive Vascular team of 9 consultants supporting in the delivery of treatment for the full range of arterial, venous and lymphatic diseases.

This post can be tailored according to the experience of the appointee; the minimum expectation is to be able to work at ST3 level. Possession of MRCS exam or equivalent is essential. Please note that the post is not recognised for training but is designed to provide advanced experience in vascular surgery.

The successful appointee will be actively involved in supporting both emergency and elective vascular activity including theatres, day case and outpatients. 

Main duties of the job

Duties include clinical support for Thyroid, Vascular and General Surgical services. To assist Consultants and senior trainees in the provision of daily ward rounds, operating theatres, undertaking the continued care & treatment of patients pre and post-operatively and attending outpatient clinics. The post holder will have exposure to training opportunities in interventional radiology as well as the opportunity to attend departmental virtual teaching.  The appointee is expected to participate in teaching & training of junior staff, medical students and trainees in Vascular Surgery and to supervise trainee medical staff within the specialty, where appropriate. The successful appointee will have the opportunity to participate in the dedicated vascular surgery, 24 hour on-call rota.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The appointee will work a 40 hour weekly programme with a mixed job plan to be agreed with the successful candidate prior to commencement.  The provisional timetable consists of inpatient and day case elective theatre sessions, emergency operating, outpatient clinics, MDT and daily ward rounds, with the opportunity to participate in a dedicated vascular on-call rota.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MBBS/MBBCh or equivalent
  • MRCS or approved overseas equivalent
  • Full GMC registration at time of application with a licence to practise.
Desirable criteria
  • Further postgraduate qualification relevant to General Surgery e.g. diploma
  • Distinctions, prizes, awards, scholarships.
  • Presentations & publications

Clinical Experience

Essential criteria
  • Minimum of 3 years post foundation years' experience in General Surgery
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in Thyroid & Vascular Surgery

Clinical Knowledge & Skills

Desirable criteria
  • Attendance at relevant courses e.g. ATLS, Basic Surgical Skills or equivalent.

Teaching/Research/Audit Experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of interest & experience in teaching junior doctors & medical students.
  • Evidence of active participation in audit
