Job overview

Various hours considered.

A rare opportunity for a Registered Nurse to join our team on the Elective Procedures Unit on Ward 202 has arisen. This is a unique role in the hospital as it focuses on empowering nurses and improving their skill sets through our highly commended nurse led discharge policy.

We are at the forefront of the hospital in pioneering this process and would offer any potential candidate the opportunity to gain this skill. We are a service that  currently  runs from Monday to Friday and a reduced staff Saturday morning to discharge those from Friday.

Our surgical specialities include laparoscopic and general surgery, complex and simple ENT, vascular surgery and maxillo-facial surgery. We have a close working relationship with the Gastro, Liver and Respiratory teams and deal with issues such as biopsies and ERCP on a regular basis. In fact our repertoire consists of over 50 procedures and by working on this unit you will learn to discharge patients after all of them.

We are a unit of about 25 staff, we have HCAs, apprentice HCAs, RNs and APs. We work as a cohesive group, with staff sharing their skills and knowledge across the unit. We like to promote learning and try to develop our staff wherever possible; come and have a look round and we can tell you more about what we do, how we'll support and develop you and why we love working here.

Main duties of the job

University Hospitals of Derby & Burton are pleased to offer an exciting opportunity for a Qualified Nursing Associate on the Elective Procedures Unit. The Elective Procedures Unit is a Nurse led, fast paced, short stay unit. We care for patients from multiple surgical and medical specialities both pre and post procedure and surgery.

We welcome applications from Nursing Associate's with a keen interest in elective care. As a unit we strive to deliver the highest quality care to our patients.

You will be responsible for admitting patients into the Elective Procedures Unit, ready for their procedures. We also admit and discharge patients following a day surgery pathway from main theatres too. There are also procedures that take place on the ward itself, which you may need to admit patients for.

Following their procedures, of they are aiming to be going home in the next 24 hours they will return to us and we will recover them and complete their discharge. We aim to empower our nurses and most patients that come through EPU will be eligible for a nurse led discharge. This reduced time waiting for TTOs, medications or Doctor reviews.

All in all, you can make a very big difference to the experience of patients on a day that can be scary, stressful and uncomfortable for them. No day is ever the same.
