Job overview

An excellent opportunity has arisen to join the Respiratory Medicine Department at University Hospitals of Derby and Burton.

The department is one of the larger and fastest growing clinical respiratory departments in the country and as such you will be joining a dynamic and close-knit team of 23 Respiratory Consultants.  The department prides itself on being innovative and progressive, and at the cutting edge of respiratory service delivery across numerous sub-specialities.

Main duties of the job

  • Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of a Respiratory Service.
  • To share with colleagues responsibility for the day-to-day management and provision of a high quality, consultant-led Respiratory Medicine service.
  • Teaching & training of junior medical staff, and medical students.
  • To actively participate in both departmental & Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance & To have responsibility for ensuring active participation in continuing medical education (CME).

In terms of location, Derby and Burton offer the best of both worlds – city life on the doorstep of a stunning rural environment. We border the National Forest and we are in easy reach of the Peak District, offering outstanding natural beauty. Detailed job description and main responsibilities

We are advertising for two substantive full-time consultant posts  and we would welcome those seeking less than full-time work to also apply.  We are looking for candidates  to join the existing consultant team based primarily at the Burton site with a sub speciality of their choice.

Successful candidates would be encouraged and supported to develop their own area of interest.

The Derby site comprises of 3 specialist respiratory wards, each with 29 beds (Wards 402 403 & 404). Ward 403 houses a 4-bed Respiratory HDU, and ward 404 includes a Respiratory Support Unit with a flexible number of beds depending on the number of patients with COVID pneumonia requiring advanced non-invasive respiratory support. There is a specialty respiratory take, with a 24/7 respiratory consultant on-call rota, and daily acute respiratory rounds. The Burton site consists of one 32-bed ward (Ward 3)  including 2 protected NIV beds.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MBBS/MBCH & possess MRCP
  • Evidence of entry on GMC Specialist Register in Respiratory Medicine and General (Internal) Medicine OR within 6 months of obtaining specialist registration
Desirable criteria
  • Higher degree / MD / PhD
  • Level 1 accreditation in thoracic ultrasound

Clinical Experience

Essential criteria
  • 5 years of supervised training in an appropriate StR equivalent training programme, together with a high standard of clinical skills and expertise in general medicine
  • Interest in lung cancer
Desirable criteria
  • Competence in EBUS and Thoracoscopy
